How long meat can be stored in the freezer?

Some 200 years have passed since the refrigerator was invented and today there are still people who, despite basing their food on frozen products, do not know how to maximize their use.

Have you ever wondered how long that chicken can stay in the bottom of the freezer or if it remains consumable or if that white spot can be toxic? Probably. And most of the time, that food ends up in the trash when it was still suitable for consumption.

If you feel identified, you should take a look at the list of storage times recommended by the  Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Quebec (Canada),  which is included below.

First of all, it is highly recommended to wrap the meat with film paper and write the freezing date there. That way you will not eat your head next time. Believe it or not, some meats can stay in the freezer for up to a year:

Chicken or turkey

  • Raw whole poultry: 10-12 months
  • Birds in raw pieces: 6-9 months
  • Poultry meat cooked in sauce: 6 months
  • Cooked poultry without sauce: 3-4 days 1-3 months

Other meats

  • Veal (steaks, rôtis): 6-12 months
  • Pig: 8-12 months
  • Minced, cubed or rolled meat: 3-4 months
  • Cooked ham: 1-2 months
  • Lamb: 6-9 months (8-12 months according to Santé Canada)
  • Bacon: 1-2 months
  • Smoked meat, sausage: 1-2 months
  • Fresh sausages: 2-3 months
  • Hot dog sausages: 1-2 months
  • Casquería (liver, heart): 3-4 months
  • Dry whole sausage: does not freeze
  • Bolognese sauce: 4-6 months
  • Meat cooked in sauce: 4 months
  • Cooking meat without sauce: 2-3 months
  • Cooked meat, chopped and vacuum packed: 1 month

Eggs

  • Whole with shell: does not freeze
  • Raw egg white: 9 months
  • Raw egg yolk: 4 months

Fish and seafood

  • Oysters, mussels and clams in its shell: they do not freeze! They are alive and it is recommended to keep them in a ventilated container
  • Cooked crab: 1 month
  • Prawns: 2-4 months
  • Oysters without shell: 2-4 months
  • Mussels without shell: 3 months
  • Clams without shell: 3 months
  • Fatty fish (salmon, trout): 2 months
  • Lean fish (sole): 6 months
  • Zamburiñas: 3 months
  • Cold smoked fish: 2 months

For  veggies

  • Tofu: 1-2 months
